Job Description

The Mechanical Design Engineer II designs and develops innovative solutions to business problems utilizing CAD software, finite-element analysis, materials analysis, 3D Printing, Lean Six Sigma, or other mechanical engineering skills. This position coordinates, plans, and executes Research and Development projects and product design, some confidential in nature, in support of the strategic plan for ArcBest and its subsidiaries. The Mechanical Design Engineer II provides clear and concise project definition, scope, action plans, and communication and develops solutions designed to meet project goals while ensuring quality throughout processes.

Responsibilities

  • Review and approve cost estimates and design calculations.
  • Support ArcBest and its subsidiaries on technical and strategic initiatives.
  • Evaluate mechanical and electromechanical systems and products by designing and conducting research programs; applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, hydraulics, and heat transfer.
  • Other duties and projects, as assigned.
  • Meet and communicate with Senior Leadership and external customers to provide updates, seek direction, give presentations, communicate success barriers, and showcase project results.
  • Serve as technical support for advanced mechanical systems.
  • Prepare product reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Test system and product capabilities by designing feasibility and testing methods.
  • Maintain a positive attitude in a highly intense environment.
  • Perform research into innovative design, operation, and product performance.
  • Direct and manage project development from beginning to end, not to exclude full risk assessment and recommendations for adjustment of priorities as needed.
  • Develop mechanical and electromechanical products by studying customer requirements.
  • Work in a team setting to accomplish department goals.
  • Define and manage project success metrics on an ongoing basis even after the completion of projects.

Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering, required
  • Master's Degree Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering (MS/ME), preferred

Experience

  • 1 year experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer.
  • Strong experience in CAD software such as SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor, preferred
  • Experience with 3D Printing, preferred
  • Programming experience, preferred

Computer Skills

  • Proficient in entire suite of Microsoft programs, and able to learn new systems quickly, required

Additional Requirements

  • Understanding of organization, behavior, business practices, and inter-connectivity within ArcBest and its subsidiaries, required
  • Ability to work independently, offer direct and factually based recommendations, conform easily based on shifting priorities, and take an unbiased approach to work, required

Other Details

Work Hours

  • Generally, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm with occasional irregular hours depending on workload.

Compensation

  • This is a salary position paid biweekly.
